Chad Michael Murray – The sweetest guy in Hollywood

Chad Michael Murray is as sweet on the inside as he appears on the outside.

Talk about typecasting, when you meet him, he’s exactly nice kid he plays on One Tree Hill.

Although in his first major movie role (House of Wax) he plays a hardnosed, moody character.

Arriving at his press conference, he sheepishly asks, “Do I look sleepy?” 

Maybe his wife of only two weeks and his One Tree Hill costar Sophia Bush has been keeping him up? (more later)

They were married in a storybook wedding.

And true to form, he cried during the ceremony.

Not that he’s a mamma’s boy; on the contrary he grew up without a mother.

“My mother left when I was ten; so my father raised five kids on his own. My father is my hero. He’s my idol. I love my father. He’s always there to help me keep my wits about me. When I get stressed out, he’ll tell me it’s got to be done. And you go ‘Okay, I’ll do it.’ 

How difficult was it growing up without a mother?

“I don’t want to go into too much depth about that, but we kind of had to take a lot of responsibility when we were young. My brother and I practically raised our younger siblings. We both worked, first it was a paper route, then I was a janitor. I pretty much worked my way through adolescence. It taught me about work ethic. It builds character. As my father says, ‘Whatever adversity you go through builds character.’ And that’s why I can sit here today and say I’m proud of what I’m doing.”

When did he first realize he wanted to be an actor?

“I’ve always wanted to be an actor.”

But didn’t he start out as a model?

“Here’s what happened. I was in the hospital for three months when I was fifteen. My nurse had been a model. She was everybody’s dream, and she just kind of inspired me. She really pushed me. ‘You could model,’ she kept telling me. I told her I really want to act, I want to be creative, I want to try on someone else’s skin. But I took a chance and went to a convention in Buffalo. I didn’t have any money, and they wanted me to come to this convention in Biloxi (Mississippi.) I told them I couldn’t afford it, and they said we’ll take care of it. They sent me there, and that’s where I met a man named Eddie Winkler, which is kind of funny because he was the only guy that hadn’t given a call back. I kept getting modeling call backs, but that wasn’t what I wanted. I wanted to act. So I went to see him, and he was surprised I wanted to act. I said, ‘Dude this is the only reason I’m here,’ and so he told me, ‘Pick up and move to L.A. I’ll let you stay in my place for two weeks. Do what you got to do.’ And I did. I lived in my car for a couple of weeks. I started studying as hard as I could, modeling to pay the bills. I had no finances, but when push comes to shove you swallow your pride and if there’s a hand-out you take it. I was lucky enough to get the Tommy Hillfiger campaign which paid my bills And that’s when I said, ‘Okay, now I can really really focus on the acting. So I studied, bought the books and the videos, rented the movies, and did everything you need to learn.”

But then he had his nose broken. 

How did that happen?

“I was visiting a friend in Panorama City (a suburb of Los Angeles) and I got jumped at a Burger King. One of my best friends lived out there. It could happen any day. It was a Sunday. Just a beautiful day.  But it didn’t end up that way.” 

So now he’s a married man. 

Did the wedding go just as planned?

“It was honestly the best day of my life. It couldn’t have gone any better. I think about it now, and there’s not one thing I’d change.”

Even more exciting than the night he proposed.

“That’s supposed to be the second best day for the woman, and then the best day is the wedding or the kid. I’m not really sure. I haven’t got there yet. But that was wonderful. I like to think of myself as a respectful man, the way my father raised me. opening car doors, picking up tabs on dinner. I just want to be able to give her everything she wants. And I wanted  that day as special as possible. It takes a lot of work, but I think it was perfect.”

His House of Wax costar and buddy (Jared Padalecki) had more to say about the engagement.

“I’ve known Chad for five years. We started together on the Gilmore Girls, he went off for Dawson’s Creek and One Tree Hill, but when I found out we were both doing this movie in Australia, we decided to live together. And I was there the day  he proposed to his wife. I showed up later that night to congratulate them and go sleep in a bedroom away from them, so yeah it was a pretty exciting experience for the two of them.”

Asked about Jared, Chad  responds: “We shared a condo together. We goofed off the whole time. We’d be up having a few brews till four in the morning, playing video games. That was awesome having a friend there.”

Getting back to the wedding, isn’t he awfully young to be married?

“It was what I wanted. I can’t tell you how much I looked forward to it. I didn’t really think of it in terms of age, and when you know, you just know. I’ve had an interesting life and grown up bit quicker than other people in my peer group, so  I felt I was ready.” 

When did they first realize they were falling in love?

“Initially it was all based on friendship. She’s my best friend. For the first month we were just friends. You’re working together in a work environment. But you wonder, Do you take it to the next step? And if we do, is it going to disturb other things because we were such good friends,  We’d sit up till seven in the morning like buddies talking about philosophy and life, and we found we had so much in common, but eventually it got the better of us.”

Didn’t anyone suggest it was not a good career move?

“I didn’t get advice from anyone. They knew I was going to do what I wanted to do.”

And now that he’s been married for three weeks, what are his expectations?

“To do it just once. I know she’ll make me a better person, and that’s all I look for. When you find someone that makes you the best version of yourself, hold on to her and cherish her.”

Can he talk about her special qualities?

“I always tell myself you should be with a woman who’s smarter than you. And in my case, he jokes,  everyone knows that.. But she’s a smart woman, and she really does make me a better man. She pushes me and she advises me. She’s an incredibly talented woman. Her work on One Tree Hill has elevated my acting. She’s inspired me to work harder. There are days when you’re tired and you just want to go through the motions, but she’ll come in and make you step up. She pushes me. She’s not one of those yes people. She keeps me calm, and at the end of the day she curls her toes up on the couch and watches a movie, and I’m in heaven.”

Is she more fashion conscious than he is?

“You bet. She dresses me. Basically I just like the things I like. If I see something, I’ll buy six of it. If I see a hat I like, I’m buying six because I know I’m going to wear it every day and it’ll be ruined in six months. On the fashion front, it’s definitely her. I grew up in Buffalo. We don’t have a lot of fashion options, she grew up in Los Angeles.”

Is he spiritual?

“I have my own spiritual values that I kind of keep to myself. I’m not the kind of person that will preach my values on somebody else.”

What more can he tell us about his father? Does he still live in Buffalo?

“He’s a great man.And he still lives in Buffalo. He’s an air traffic controller, which everyone says is a stressful job, but it was like a vacation for him having to come home to five kids. He came out for the wedding, and he’s coming out for the premiere. He really supports me, and it’s nice because if I have a problem at 3 o’clock in the morning, I  can always pick up the phone and call my pops and he’ll try to give me the best advice he can even though he’s not connected to the movie world.” 

Having helped bring up his younger siblings, is he looking forward to being a father himself?

“I hope so. I hope I’m a good pop someday.”

But not right away?

“Right now I have so much i want to do. So I’m going to wait a while and just try to continue to grow.”

“I’m still a baby in the world,” he protests sweetly, but adds, “I hope I’m going to be a good father. I learned from the best.”

Why was he in the hospital for three months?

“When I was fifteen I had a resection of my small intestines. They had twisted; so they had to cut them out,  but then there were some complications and I couldn’t eat for three months. I remember watching more Burger King commercials and getting hungrier than I ever have been. You have no idea how many food commercials there are on television until you’ve not  eaten for three months. You’re constantly changing channels,  but it all ended up all right.” 

Will his fans accept him as the hard-nosed character in House of Wax?

“The great thing about playing a character like Nick, you can really delve into the guy. I tried to bring a lot of little idiosyncrasies into his character. And it was such a departure from anything I had done before. I mean, playing the sweet romantic charming guy can be fun, but it was nice to take a break from that , not that I won’t go back to that because God knows  those movies are really sweet and romantic. But right now I’m trying to do different things. I have another picture at the end of the summer. I really want to challenge myself creatively.”

He and his wife have moved into a new house.

Is she doing the decorating?

“She does all the decorating. I’m no  interior decorator-architect like Brad Pitt. I watch football on Sundays. I put together charity events. That’s my thing. She’s definitely the interior decorator.  She has such good style. She’s painting every room, with each wall a different color.  And she’s like obsessive-compulsive; she can’t stop once she starts. It’ll be 4 o’clock in the morning. I want to go to bed, but there’s dishes out, so I’ll go to bed later. So yes, we have a beautiful home in Wilmington. I’m happy there. I had a house of my own for three years that I spent no time at. But now life is good.”

Sadly that marriage lasted only five months, but he is happily married now and has ben for six years.
