Chris Pine — When he was more than just the “It” Boy

June 2012 By Philip Berk

What’s happened to Chris Pine?

Remember a year ago when he was the it boy?

Captain Kirk in Star Trek had made him the hottest new star in Hollywood, and he followed that with an impressive costarring turn in Unstoppable.

Then there was his foray in the theatre.

Playing the Ryan Gosling role in the a  LA theatre company production of Farragut North (retitled The Ides of March for the film) he received reviews actors can only dream of.

Since then, however, he’s kept a low profile

Maybe even a no profile,

When he arrives at his press conference he is quite sullen, hiding behind thick lens horn-rimmed glasses.

His latest This Means War looks like the type of project that could resuscitate his career, but it’s not likely to.

It features three charismatic costars — Reese Witherspoon, Tom Hardy, and Chris Pine —  but there’s no chemistry there.

At his press conference photographers ask him to remove his glasses, but he won’t oblige.

Why the need to wear glasses?

Surprisingly he admits, “I have bad eyes,” a condition apparent from his previous films but more obvious in this one.

So how come he’s been laying low for the past year? I ask him.

“In terms of who’s the hottest star and all that kind of stuff, everything goes in phases. It’s like Chris Hemsworth, for example, he had a smaller part and was wonderful in Star Trek, and then he went on to do great things, and now he’s he’s riding that wave, which I hope lasts for as long as it can.  I was very aware when it happened for me, it was nice to have all those articles come out about me being the next young thing, but this is a fickle business. I don’t necessarily like to work back to back, so in these past eight months I’ve traveled the world and bought a home and did a lot of wonderful life stuff that I didn’t get a chance to do for about a year-and-a-half or two years before.

Q: Was it all your choice?

A: Crafting a perfect career is almost impossible. Could I have done something else and made different choices and worked more? Probably, but that was not my inclination at the time, and I had a great time not working.

Q: In retrospect could you have done things differently?

A: Sure I’ve made awful choices, some I regret, but nothing came to me that I really wanted to do. There was one project called MUD that came round that Reese actually ended up doing that I really wanted to do, but the stars didn’t align for that scheduling wise, but I am not too concerned about all that.  I’m happy for the next guys to come and enjoy that ride.

Q: You didn’t turn down The Ides of March? (as has been rumored)

A: No, no, I wanted that very badly, yeah.

Q: You play a ladies man in the movie. How much of a ladies man are you? And would you date two women at the same time?

A: It’s a very tricky question. Okay, yes, I have dated more than one woman. But is it okay that Reese’s dating two guys? I am more on the side of the woman. If anything I think the guys are the ones that are duplicitous and schemey. In the movie Reese is dating two guys to discover who’s the best bet. I think we’ve all done it and been there. In America there’s this Puritanical thinking that women shouldn’t play the field, they should pick one guy, and it’s true love. There’s something wonderfully forward thinking and practical in our film that challenges that notion that a woman has to find a guy or she’s not complete.”

Q: McG (the director) described you as the typical all American boy.

A: What an asshole!

Q: What do you think he meant?

A: I have no idea. It sounds really bland and boring. Yesterday  a journalist– oh, God, it was so painful —  told me, you’re very vanilla and Tom is like dulce de leche, like what the hell does that mean? It was like a little dagger in my heart. A typical American? I don’t know what that means.”

(Rumors have been circulating that he and Tom didn’t get along on the set, and that animosity continued during the press junket.)

Q: How close are you to FDR (his character in the film)?

A: Not all that close. But it’s always fun getting to play a part like this, to dress up in nice clothes and play the ladies’ man, because I don’t think anyone actually feels like he’s a ladies’ man. I know I am not, but I’d like to think I am.

Q: So you don’t have that swagger FDR has in the movie?

A: No, no. In fact, when I did that movie Just My Luck with Lindsay Lohan many years ago, some of my friends were visiting from out of town, and we’re at this club in L.A., and we’re waiting outside and they’re like, ‘Just go up and like tell them who you are and get us in the club.’ I was like fuck, fine so I walk up and I talk to the guy at the door. ‘I just did a movie with Lindsay Lohan, maybe you can..,’ and he said something like, ‘Of course you did,’ and then months later I’m reading the New York Times and there’s a front page article about bouncers in New York, and he talked about me. It was humiliating; so no swagger. No swagger.

Q: So what qualities do you look for in a woman?

A: I do like high heels, (he jokes ) I do like intelligence and wit and confidence, all the things that everybody likes, sensitivity and humor and beauty, all that.

Q: What would be your definition of sexiness and romance?

A: A great laugh. I don’t think I have a great answer for that.

Q:  And romance?

A: I think you can try too hard for romance, try to do what you’re supposed to do whether it’s the candles and the rose petals on the table and all that kind of stuff. I think good romance comes from great love, and if you really love someone deeply you don’t need to try so hard to win their affection. It’ll come from a real authentic place and be way sexier than any kind of violin playing on the sand.

Q: Have you ever been dumped by a girl friend, and how do you console yourself?

A: I have, and It sucks. What do I do? I just walk away sheepishly and cry (he’s joking) and listen to sad music in the dark in my room. Actually I just walk away with my tail between my legs.

Q: What do you think is your best quality?

A: Asking questions, showing interest in others, listening to others.

Q: What are your indulgences?

A: I do like cars. I have a Porsche. It’s a gorgeous car.  I like beauty, I like lines, I like the aesthetic things. I like the architecture of things. I’m really getting into furniture now. I like pens a lot.  I like structure. I like something that’s well made. I can appreciate it whether it’s a woman’s shoe or a nicely tailored suit, really anything. I am a collector, but I don’t hoard. I’m a one-off guy. I have one nice pen, one nice car, yeah.”

And hopefully one good movie in the cards.

Let’s hope JJ’s Star Trek 2 turns things around for him.

He’s a nice guy and he deserves it…
