When Zoe Saldana was asked how strong her costar David Bautista was, her answer, “Have you seen his hands? They’re like this big,” she jokes. “If it’s raining I just tell Dave to put his hand on my head.”
David’s response is somewhat subdued. ”I appreciate you saying that but that’s been the message throughout my career.”
And he wants to be taken more seriously.
“I really come from nothing. I’m a poor kid, from the streets. What I’ve been able to achieve has been through hard work and not letting anyone say I couldn’t do something.
“So this project is by far the biggest thing I’ve ever done in my life, and to be a part of this is really a dream come true. I always try to tell people, whether I’m talking to kids or just tweeting out stuff, pursue your dreams, just pursue your dreams.”
What part is he playing?
“I play Draxx who’s a pretty bad dude. He’s full of rage, but he’s full of honor. He’s very literal; the best thing about him is he’s hysterical without meaning to be. That’s what I love the most about him.”
Was he nervous going into the audition?
“People ask me that a lot. It was nerve wracking. Going to auditions for me is like the worst thing in the world, just terrifying, but people don’t get it. They think because you’ve performed in front of 100,000 people, it should be easy, but it’s not. It’s so intimate, so much attention is put on you. It’s absolutely terrifying.”
Is acting any easier?
“It’s new to me, and I’m still a student at this. But I’m not afraid to let people know that. I’m not afraid to go up to people and pick their brains and ask for advice because that’s how you get better. I’ve gotten better at everything I’ve ever done because I’m not too proud to ask for help, and to me that’s how you stay young, If you’re pursuing something that you love, and you learn something new every day, that’s the key to youth.”
