Jennifer Aniston – 20 years ago she was the good girl

  May 2002 By Philip Berk

Good things happen to the Good Girl.

Jennifer Aniston who earns almost a million dollars a week as one of the TV Friends is currently slumming, starring in a very low budget movie called The Good Girl.

The reviews have been glowing, but then Jennifer has always had a charmed life.

Besides her inordinate income, she is married to Hollywood’s most desirable (and highest paid) actor Brad Pitt.

When I ask her if she’s embarrassed to cash her check each week, she becomes quite defensive.

“I’m always uncomfortable with that question,” she replies. “I find it truly intrusive. I would never ask someone else about their income or, ‘Do you feel you earned it?’ I feel I’ve earned it. Absolutely. We don’t really hear about other amounts of money the studio is generating from the show. So I don’t have anything to defend on that level. I feel very comfortable.”

Another question I ask needs prompting on my part to get the answer I’m looking for.

What was the best decision she ever made?

“They were all good, every one. I don’t have many regrets. I’ve learned from every mistake or bad choice I ever made. I’m a believer in that. ”

How about her decision to go on a date with Brad?

“Of course that was a great decision.”

Whose idea was that?

“Our managers thought we might hit if off.”

Was it love at first sight?

“We had a good feeling, but you never know. But there was something, definitely something different.”

Did she always think of herself as someone who would get married or wasn’t that a high priority?

“Actually I was never somebody who dreamed of marriage, weddings and stuff like that.  But once I redefined it for myself, it exceeded all my expectations.”

Suddenly she remembers another decision she once made that changed her life.

“I was living in New York, visiting in Los Angeles. I decided to extend my vacation and not go back. I kept extending my vacation, and after three months I finally got a job, but then I was offered Friends. They (the other producers) weren’t going to let me go to do Friends. I remember doing a photo-shoot with the cast (of Friends) and having to stand out of some pictures just in case the other show got picked up. And then it got picked up, and there was a moment when I didn’t know if I was going to be a part of the show. Thankfully I fought for it. I sat with the producer and basically begged him to let me out of the show which was called Muddling Through. I remember a girl friend calling me to say, ‘I’m auditioning for your part on Friends because I heard you’re getting replaced. Could you help me with the audition?’ And I was, ‘God no. Not yet. Let’s just wait till all the nails are in the coffin.’ So that decision was a big one.”

Ironically she was born in Los Angeles. Her parents, both actors, divorced when she was nine, and she went to live with her mother in New York.

She doesn’t talk about her mother, who famously wrote a tell-all book about her a few years ago, but she’s happy to talk about Brad.

What kind of relationship do they have?

“We’re very supportive. It’s based on love and friendship, that’s the heart of it.”

Is she eager to start a family?

“We definitely want to, at some point, probably in the next year or two.”

Many times couples have children to save a marriage, not that theirs needs saving, but would she do something like that?

“It’s a tricky question because obviously a child is not going to be a band-aid on a relationship. But in some cases, there are times when it does bring the couple to a place of closeness again. And sometimes it can be the final pitfall, and that’s unfortunate for the child.”

In the movie she plays a “good girl” who does what’s expected of her. Is that what she was like growing up?

“Yes indeed, trying to please everybody and then you make bad choices, that aren’t completely honest, to protect everybody else. In the meantime you end up digging yourself in deeper and deeper.”

Obviously she’s referring to her parents.

“Being a child of divorce and being the mediator between two parents, I guess I tried to protect both of them, sometimes lying about things to not hurt Mom and then lying about things to not hurt Dad, and getting myself in trouble on both counts.”

So how did she come through that?

“My survival technique has always been humor, finding humor in everything. It’s always been very important to me whenever I was feeling down or dark.”

Something she doesn’t feel too often these days.

She may be married to Prince Charming, but she’s no pushover. As a matter of fact, she’s as strong willed and outspoken as anyone I’ve ever interviewed. (Having a sizable income herself, I suppose, helps.)

Brad’s hobby is architecture.

She has her own ideas on the subject.

They’ve spent the last year renovating an Old world-type home he purchased a few years back.

How do they reconcile their different tastes?

“We’ve kind of… He’s more modern and streamlined about the future. I’m more old world and classic. But we’ve merged them together, sort of a nice combo. He likes to work on the structure, and I like to fill it up. I do the inside, and he does the outside.”

And if they disagree?

“We fight it out. Whoever’s standing wins.”

And I believe it.

When asked about their impending separation while Brad shoots in Australia and she’s doing Friends in Hollywood, she says she’ll visit him when she can.

Will she take Sarah Michelle Gellar’s advise not to go to Queensland?

“Who said that?” she wants to know.

“Sarah Michelle Gellar.”

“She said not to go to Queensland but to go to Sydney? What does she have invested in Sydney!”

Have they ever talked about it? I ask her.

“I’ve never met her,” she replies with disdain.

Incidentally Brad handles separation with great dexterity.

As he told me shortly after he and Jennifer were married and he was filming Spy Game in Hungary. “We do really well. We’re on e-mail; we’ve got those little cameras that we just hook up, where we can see each other. It freezes the pictures in four seconds, the technology is really good. You get to see one another on that day. You see the surroundings. It’s really cool.”

They recently celebrated their second wedding anniversary.

What did that mean to her?

“I think of it as having completed another year of our life together. It was a day to celebrate, and I love celebrating. Not everybody does, but I do. I love birthdays also. It’s important. Although every day is an anniversary, kind of.”

How do they like to spend an evening?

“The best thing we love to do is just sit at home and work in the same room together.”

Doing what?

“We read scripts or we read books or watch movies. Quiet dinners. Game nights with our friends.”

Brad is growing a beard for the movie. It’s called The Fountain and is directed by Darren Aronovsky.

Does she enjoy kissing him with all that hair on his face?

“I just love kissing him. And the beard is a necessary evil. It’s gotten a lot softer because it’s grown past the point where it stabs you, and now he conditions it.”

She and Brad are the most sought after couple in the world.

Are there days when she’d like to have her privacy back?

“Of course. I would love it. I would love to go on a vacation where we’re not pursued. But I’m very thankful for everything we have.”

Has she ever used a disguise?

“You man wigs and stuff. Hats and glasses. I haven’t tried that, but it wouldn’t matter; they’ve got radar.”

Growing up she attended the Rudolph Steiner school in New York. What was that all about?

“Steiner founded a philosophy called anthroposophy. Don’t ask me what it means. It’s a form of Christianity.  My mom was an anthroposophist. It was my mom’s thing. I was always like, ‘Oh, you grow your arm pit hair and you wear Birkenstocks and you’re weird.’ But it was an amazing school, very artistic. They stick a paint brush or a piece of clay or wood in your hands in the first grade and you create. I loved it.”

Did it influence her religious orientation?

“Spiritually I’m just sort of finding my own thing. I don’t really have any religion that I’m part of. I’m kind of an everythingist.”

How does she stay grounded and avoid the pitfalls of fame?

“You don’t buy into the hype. It breeds such awful behavior. I’ve witnessed terrible stuff, met people I never wished I’d met. Power can be very seductive.”

And she was never seduced?

“I was never an ambitious person. As a kid I never thought I’d make it. My teachers were always telling me to get out. I was a disgrace to the theatre. In the two years I lived in New York I was waitressing and auditioning. I got maybe two jobs. I couldn’t get a commercial to save my life. I couldn’t get close to Broadway. I was off, off, off Broadway. But still I was happy. I never thought I was destined for greatness, maybe just happiness.”

And is she?

“I’m happy watching the sunset or taking a hike. Brad and I, we’re just good mirrors for each other. We’re honest with each other. We bring out the best in each other. And that makes us happy.”
