Most child actors mature horribly.

Not Ryan Gosling.

Arriving at his press conference for The Big Short, I am dazzled. He has to be the best looking actor in Hollywood, and I tell him so.

Smolderingly handsome, Ryan has that effortless grace that distinguishes him from his peers. His uncanny ability to communicate without words — a smile, a wink, a shrug —  says it all.

And off screen he’s equally courteous, gentle, and sensitive, but this time I notice an important change.

No longer is he guarded in talking about his personal life; without prodding he opens up about the daughter he sired with actress Eva Mendes when they worked together two years ago on Lost River, which he directed. Now he’s even willing to discuss their relationship, something that was tabu when I interviewed both of them at that film junket.

Which was also the case when he was courting Rachel McAdams; the two had met on The Notebook and fell in love.

At that interview, ten years ago, I predicted he’d become the next big star. 

But true to his nature, he chose to appear in two movies that nobody saw or wanted to see, and in fact he hasn’t had a bona fide hit since.

The Big Short is not likely to change things, but it will get award recognition.

The stories we read on the internet that you had a natural stutter and a violent nature as a child, and that you were home schooled because you couldn’t function in special classes for slow learners, are any of those true?

The more I read about myself, the more I see this kind of picture painted about me, especially stories that I had a really rough upbringing, they are far from the truth. I may have been troubled, but it wasn’t as traumatic as they’ made it out to be.

One thing for sure, he didn’t come from a conventional family, as he volunteers to tell us.   

Everyone in our town worked in the paper mill, that is until my uncle came to live with us. I was seven at the time, and one day I saw my uncle, bedazzling in a white jumpsuit in our living-room, impersonating Elvis. Then and there he decided he was going to become an Elvis Impersonator; he started talking like Elvis and walking like Elvis and singing like Elvis, and it was certainly the most interesting thing that had ever happened to our family, maybe even to our town. It was so exciting that everyone wanted to be involved; so my father became head of his security, and my mother became a back-up singer; I became a back-up dancer, and suddenly we were all in his act. He put on this big performance at a mall, and women were jumping on the stage – it was insanity and then for whatever reason he stopped, and everything went back to normal. It was like the circus had left town. I was left feeling like, What just happened? Can we do that again? And that’s what started me on my own way to keeping that energy alive.

Not long after, he began his career as a Mouseketeer, joining the likes of Justin, Britney, and Christina, extroverts all, who need no last name.

Ryan on the other hand has never embraced celebrity. Nor publicity for that matter.

Ten years ago when Hurricane Katrina struck, Sean Penn grabbed the headlines, but it was Ryan who  jumped into his car, drove to Louisiana, and did something about it.

Nobody knew.

And in fact he never let on that he’s done relief work in Darfur and spent time at refugee camps in Chad.

What motivates him to do those things? I asked him then.

“I feel like I’ve gotten more out of those experiences than I’ve given. I can’t see not doing it, especially when I have the time and the resources.”

Does it give him peace of mind?

“I’m not sure. Sometimes I’m happy when I should be sad, and I’m sad when I should be happy. Sometimes I don’t feel anything when I should. I think what pulls me is love and the lack of it. We all want it, and we don’t know how to get it.”

Eight years later it appears he’s found it.

The Big Short deals with the 2007 worldwide housing market collapse. When asked the best investment he ever made, his answer is jaw dropping.

Right now just to have a beautiful, healthy daughter who’s an angel; that’s a great investment.

Are you planning a bigger family? 

Just one step at a time, please. Thank you. 

How much time do you devote to your daughter?

I try to get home before 7 o’clock (he jokes.)

Do you change diapers, give her a bottle. How good are you doing those things?

You’d have to ask my girlfriend really, but it’s  not rocket science. I can handle it. The important thing for me is to be there, and because I want to be there, it’s fun.

What makes Eva so special?

Just that she’s Eva Mendes. 

And specifically?

We don’t have enough time to get into that  – we’d need a  whole week.

What are their plans for Christmas?

We had one Christmas before, but she (daughter  Esmeraldo) was only a few months old; so this will be our first Christmas where she’s taking it all in; so that’s exciting. 

Will your families be getting together?

I don’t know exactly how Christmas is going to go down this year. I am excited about it, but don’t have any specifics.  

What makes the relationship so special?

I don’t really know how to answer that except to say that it’s all really about who you’re with. I know for myself that I’m with the person I’m supposed to be with. There’s nothing else I’m looking  for.

Careerwise, you’ve gone out of your way to make idiosyncratic movies rather than the blockbusters you were offered. Was that always the wisest thing to do?

For me the definition of success is choice, and that’s all I’ve ever aspired to have, a choice over what I make and what stories I tell. I feel very lucky to be in a position to do that and to have free agency.

Do you spurn advice from others?

I don’t know if it’s that extreme. I have people in my life that I trust, and filmmakers that I’ve worked with multiple times; so I think it’s a balance between knowing where you want to go and  allowing yourself to be pushed a little into directions that you’re not sure you’re capable of. 

The Big Short is hardly the feel good movie of the season.

What’s interesting about this film is that it’s not presenting any of these characters as heroes, and it’s not celebrating the big score that they pull off in the end. One of my favorite moments in the film is when Brad Pitt’s character says, “Don’t dance. Have the decency not to dance. If you’re right about this and you win, good, hardworking people will suffer as result,” and I think that’s the moral sentiment of the movie.

It’s not the easiest movie to follow.

You’re right. It’s hard to hop on board and keep up with all decisions these characters make. And some things are intentionally made to make you feel stupid so you don’t ask the questions which allowed these guys to get away with this. But in the end the movie is a cautionary tale.

Could it happen again?

I hope not. 

Are you interested in the stock market and have you been a wise investor?

I have no interest in it whatsoever, and the fact that the writer and director made it interesting was to me a real feat.

How about property? Are you an investor?

The first house I bought was for my mom, and that was nice. Other than that, I don’t really get involved in the real estate market.

Not even for yourself?

I’ve changed homes a few times as my life has progressed.

I don’t know how it got started, and I don’t know why. I’m just hoping it’ll end soon.
